What kills a cow and smells like fish?

Answer: a Cambodian bus

Here’s a crazy story before we catch you up with what has been going on the past week. So we are riding on a bus from Siem Reap to Kratie, . We were lulled to sleep by the gentle rocking of the bus until we heard a loud thud and felt a slight bump.

Beef, it's what's for dinner

The bus screeched to a halt and worried faces looked to the back window of the bus. Fortunately we had only run over a calf (and not a person). You see, here in Cambodia, people walk and ride their bikes along the highways and cows roam free. So the bus driver backed up to the dead calf and many people got out of the bus. There were discussions between the driver and some of the passengers. The next thing we know, they are opening a luggage compartment under the bus and proceeded to wrestle the dead calf into the bus. This compartment was separated from the compartment with our backpacks so we were relieved, thinking our backpacks were safe from any blood and guts. We inspected the damage on the bus and they lost part of the bumper and an air filter.

When we arrived in Kratie, the bus driver threw out our backpacks before we even got off the bus. By the time we got to our bags, the bus sped off and we discovered that our backpacks reeked of fish. In the compartment under the bus, a box of salted fish must have leaked and covered our bags in fish juice. We tried to complain to the bus company but they said it was the driver’s responsibility, hence the reason he sped off so quickly after dumping our bags. We had this happen to us before in Peace Corps so it wasn’t new to us. Continue reading →

From here to Cambodia

Well, we thought that we would be able to do more blog posts while traveling, but it seems that the internet connection is very slow and we would rather spend our time enjoying the sights rather than sitting at a computer.  So we are sorry that this is only the second blog entry.  We will try to be better at blogging more frequently.

Since our last post, we traveled from Saigon to have a rural homestay experience in a village called Vihn Long in the Mekong Delta.  We slept under a mosquito net in an open air room.  At least there was running water, though!  We woke up early the next day and traveled on the back of motorbikes for 2 hours to Can Tho.  The ride was exhilerating, as long as we did not think of the danger (Mom and Dad, we wore helmets).  As we have said before the traffic here is chaotic at best.  We even got some video footage of the crazy ride.  In Can Tho we enjoyed a private tour with another couple, Matt (Kiwi) and Ethlen (Irish), of the Cai Raing floating market.  Vietnamese sell their veggies and fruits out of their boats on the Mekong.  It was quite interesting.  They even had vegetable billboards; the veggies and fruits available for purchase were dangling from a pole so you could see exactly what everyone was selling.

Good Morning Viet Nam!!

So here we are, in Saigon! We almost can’t believe it. This trip has been a long time coming…

The preparation for this trip has been monumental with many “checkpoints” along the way: do we have our clothes for Rick & Gayla’s wedding? Check!; did we inform Amy & Rob about all of our kitties’ idiosyncrasies? Check!; did we make sure we didn’t leave the stove on at our house? Check!; did we pack our camera in our carry-on? NO!!!! We started freaking out, thinking we had left it in the hotel in Dallas or somewhere along the way. We hoped it got packed into our checked bags and we would find it when we arrived in Vietnam.

Ho Chi Minh City street scene

We had planned on sleeping during our flights to Vietnam, but it ended up being a movie marathon. We never go to the movie theater so this was our time to catch up on current movies. We watched Avatar, Sherlock Holmes, Crazy Heart, The Proposal, Up in the Air, and The Blind Side. They were all great!

So after 24 hours and almost 10,000 miles, we finally arrived in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.
