From here to Cambodia

Well, we thought that we would be able to do more blog posts while traveling, but it seems that the internet connection is very slow and we would rather spend our time enjoying the sights rather than sitting at a computer.  So we are sorry that this is only the second blog entry.  We will try to be better at blogging more frequently.

Since our last post, we traveled from Saigon to have a rural homestay experience in a village called Vihn Long in the Mekong Delta.  We slept under a mosquito net in an open air room.  At least there was running water, though!  We woke up early the next day and traveled on the back of motorbikes for 2 hours to Can Tho.  The ride was exhilerating, as long as we did not think of the danger (Mom and Dad, we wore helmets).  As we have said before the traffic here is chaotic at best.  We even got some video footage of the crazy ride.  In Can Tho we enjoyed a private tour with another couple, Matt (Kiwi) and Ethlen (Irish), of the Cai Raing floating market.  Vietnamese sell their veggies and fruits out of their boats on the Mekong.  It was quite interesting.  They even had vegetable billboards; the veggies and fruits available for purchase were dangling from a pole so you could see exactly what everyone was selling.

Good Morning Viet Nam!!

So here we are, in Saigon! We almost can’t believe it. This trip has been a long time coming…

The preparation for this trip has been monumental with many “checkpoints” along the way: do we have our clothes for Rick & Gayla’s wedding? Check!; did we inform Amy & Rob about all of our kitties’ idiosyncrasies? Check!; did we make sure we didn’t leave the stove on at our house? Check!; did we pack our camera in our carry-on? NO!!!! We started freaking out, thinking we had left it in the hotel in Dallas or somewhere along the way. We hoped it got packed into our checked bags and we would find it when we arrived in Vietnam.

We had planned on sleeping during our flights to Vietnam, but it ended up being a movie marathon. We never go to the movie theater so this was our time to catch up on current movies. We watched Avatar, Sherlock Holmes, Crazy Heart, The Proposal, Up in the Air, and The Blind Side. They were all great!

So after 24 hours and almost 10,000 miles, we finally arrived in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.

Getting ready for the BIG trip

A little trip planning

Well, it has been awhile since my last post, so I would like to welcome myself back to my blog. I have been working on our blog (in the background) in preparation for our trip to Southeast Asia. We want to provide reports back to family and friends while we are traveling (so that they know that we are safe and sound). Basically, our blog will become our travelogue. There are many beneficial reasons for this:

  • We will not need to send individualized emails out to our large list of family and friends.
  • Pictures and videos can be easily shared with links in our blog.
  • We can record funny stories and experiences soon after they happen. (so we don’t forget anything from our travels)
  • While writing our blog posts from internet cafes, we will upload our pictures and videos at the same time so that our memory cards are cleaned out for the next day’s adventures.
  • You will be able to keep up with our current whereabouts with this cool Google map of our travels. Note: We are not currently in Saigon.
